Identification, Identity Management & Security

Overview

Exponent is the nation’s leading engineering and scientific consulting firm dedicated to analyzing and preventing technological and engineering-related failures. Exponent is a recognized leader in the testing and evaluation of technology and products used for identification, identity management, and security. Identity management is the process of creating, verifying and maintaining a unique identity for an individual.

Frequently the identification process involves the issuance of a physical identity credential (badge, license, ID card, passport, etc.) to which privileges can be linked. These privileges commonly involve access control, through which authorized persons are granted access to information, facilities, computer networks, and equipment while unauthorized personnel are denied access.

With the ever-growing need for better and more reliable physical and logical security, identification credentials are increasingly using multi-factor identity authentication (something you have, something you know and something you are) and biometrics such as fingerprints, iris patterns, facial recognition or hand geometry. These multi-faceted means of identity verification require sophisticated identity documents that can store and process information.

Exponent’s work for DoD, Federal agencies, and commercial organizations address many facets of identification, identity management, and security; for instance:

  • Anti-tampering
  • Fraud Detection
  • Authentication
  • Logical Access
  • Biometrics
  • New Field Communications (NFC)
  • Contactless Cards
  • Physical Access
  • Contact Cards
  • Secure Online Transactions
  • Credentialing
  • Security Features Testing
  • Cyber Security
  • Smart Card Testing

The most common, secure, and flexible means of providing increased security is though a secure credential called a smartcard. These electronic, credit-card sized cards contain an embedded integrated circuit which can be used for identification, authentication, data storage, and computation.

Exponent offers a wide range of services to improve the capability and reliability of identification devices, smartcards, equipment, and processes. We offer testing, design analysis, reliability studies, performance assessment, failure analysis, and engineering support. Our multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers has the capabilities needed to serve industries such as airlines, banking, gaming, government, health care, hotels, retail, travel and entertainment, and vending.

Exponent is certified to ISO 9001 and is authorized by the Government Services Agency (GSA) to provide professional engineering services. Exponent participates in the ANSI and ISO Working Groups on Identification Cards and Related Technologies and helps write the standards relating to Physical Characteristics, Test Methods, and Interoperability.
