Determining when environmental contamination occurred is a central question in many environmental and toxic tort cases and in insurance claims. Environmental forensic scientists are often asked to determine the age and/or release date of contaminants found in groundwater, soils, and sediments. Chemical contaminant age-dating is made possible through a number of scientific tools that can be used collectively to create a multiple-lines-of-evidence approach to a particular release.
