Exponent Consultants Publish Article on the Off-label Use of Growth Factors Known as Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMP)

Dr. Kevin Ong, Dr. Marta Villarraga, Mr. Edmund Lau, and Dr. Steve Kurtz recently published an article in Spine on the off-label use of growth factors known as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP). In this article, the Exponent team and other co-authors analyzed the types of procedures involving the use of BMP from a nationwide sample of hospital discharges in the U.S. They found that the annual number of procedures involving BMP increased by 4.3-fold between 2003 and 2007. At least 85% of principal procedures using BMP were found to be for off-label applications. Click here to read the abstract.
