Exponent Engineers Interviewed On CCTV-9 Regarding Sichuan Earthquake

Betsy Mathieson, Senior Managing Scientist and Professional Geologist in the Oakland office, and Dr. Dave Sykora, Principal Engineer and Professional Geotechnical Engineer in the Irvine office, were interviewed on English-broadcast, state-run China Central Television (CCTV-9) regarding last week’s Sichuan Earthquake (magnitude 8.0) and the likelihood of landslides.   Ms. Mathieson  currently serves as a member of California’s Alfred E. Alquist Seismic Safety Commission. Dr. Sykora’s professional background includes a combined 25 years of experience as a consulting engineer and in applied government research at the former U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, Geotechnical Laboratory. Both have experience with slope stability and landslides, expansive soil response, collapsible soil, failures in sensitive saprolite and stiff fissured clays, sinkholes, internal soil erosion (“piping”), loss of lateral support, ground vibrations, foundation design, earth pressures, soil settlement, slope creep, earthquake ground shaking, liquefaction, lateral spread, soil-structure interaction, soil-slab interaction, soil-pipe interaction,  and differing site conditions.
