Exponent scientists Tiffani Fordyce and Libby Morimoto will be presenting at the National Occupational Injury Research Symposium, October 21, 22, and 23, 2008, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is hosting NOIRS 2008, the 4th such symposium focusing on research for the prevention of work-related traumatic injuries.

Ms. Fordyce will be presenting two papers, “Work-Related Motor Vehicle Crashes Among Electric Utility Workers,” and “Work-Related Injury Trends Among Electric Utility Workers. ” In these presentations, she will discuss results of analyses using data collected from electric utility companies that are members of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The motor vehicle study was a pilot study to assess the feasibility of using EPRI data to examine trends in crash rates and crash characteristics among electric utility workers, a unique subset of the occupational workforce. In the injury trend study, 13 years of injury and personnel data from electric utility companies were analyzed to examine trends in injury and illness over time and across job characteristics and demographics factors.

Dr. Morimoto will be presenting the results of case-control study using EPRI injury, called “Factors That Distinguish Serious Versus Less Severe Strain and Sprain Injuries: An Analysis of Electric Utility Workers.” This study evaluated the types injuries sustained by electric utility workers in relation to age, gender, occupation, and years of job experience. All of these data can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of prevention programs and spotlight additional areas for surveillance and outreach.
