Children ages 0-12 spend roughly 16% of their awake hours each week playing; younger children spend two to three times as much time playing as compared to the older children in this age range. Each year, approximately 3 billion toys are sold in the United States, with many remaining in US households for more than one year. We have conducted a number of toy hazard assessments in response to consumer complaints, litigation, and concerns raised by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Through analysis of accident and injury patterns, child development and play patterns, and the characteristics of a given product, we have advised as to whether specific toys or toy features present an unreasonable risk of injury to children. We have compared the potential for an alleged injury or accident scenario presented by one toy to that presented by other toys and common products with which children interact. Such work has aided in the design of toys, the development of toy manufacturer policy and awareness, reporting and recall decisions, and the assessment of injury claims.
