Understanding Exposure for the Analysis of Asbestos Liabilities: Teleconference

Seminars and Conferences

BVR Legal/Mealey's is sponsoring a teleconference entitled, "A New Approach to Understand Exposure for the Analysis of Asbestos Liabilities," featuring Exponent Exponent Principal’s Dr. Robin Cantor and Dr. Richard Reiss.

Tuesday, November18, 2008
1:00pm Eastern

This teleconference will address a new approach to understand the role of exposure in assessing the risks of asbestos-related diseases. This approach relies on exposure simulation, which is a scientifically based methodology to investigate the potential risks that people face from products containing harmful materials. The application of this approach was key in the recent WR Grace decision regarding the risks of attic insulation containing vermiculite to residents and contractors. In that decision, the Court accepted the results of an exposure simulation to substantiate that claimants are not exposed to greater health risks from the attic insulation product than otherwise, and that the product poses no unreasonable risk of harm sufficient to support claims for property damage.

Experts familiar with the design and application of the exposure simulation methodology in the context of toxic tort exposures will discuss:

  • Explanation of exposure simulation and its importance for historical exposures to asbestos products and the risks of asbestos disease
  • The relevance of the methods for different industries and applications
  • Implications for different groups of exposed claimants
  • Implications for interpreting historical exposures and projections of disease incidence
  • The value of more reliable exposure analysis for the general modeling used to project long-term estimates of product liability
