Washington Association of State Fire Marshals Roundtable

November 8, 2012

Mr. Adam Farnham, Managing Engineer in Exponent’s Thermal Sciences practice, was a featured speaker for the Washington Association of State Fire Marshals at their 2012 Roundtable meeting. His lecture covered the inspection, testing and maintenance requirements for wet chemical extinguishing systems under NFPA 17A. The lecture also focused on the performance requirements for these protective systems under UL 300 listings, and how to analyze and document a protective system’s performance after a discharge.

Building and fire codes in most jurisdictions require protection of commercial hood and duct systems used for the removal of grease-laden vapors from kitchens. Model codes adopt NFPA 96 “Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations” and also incorporate NFPA 17A “Standard for Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems” and UL 300 "Fire Testing of Fire Extinguishing Systems for Protection of Restaurant Cooking Areas."
