Exponent Presenting Papers at the Ergonomics Society Annual Conference

Michael Kuzel, P.E. of the Vehicle Engineering practice will be presenting two papers at the Ergonomics Society Annual Conference in Nottingham, England on April 1-3, 2008. The results of one of the studies, “Perception and Cognition During Walking While Concurrently Using a Cellular Phone,” indicate that cellular phone use significantly affects the ability of an individual to both visually detect and gather detail about objects in their environment. Although much research has been done to document the effects of cell phone use on driving, this is the first known investigation of the effects of cell phone use while walking. The co-authors are Michelle Heller and Sherry DiJorio of Exponent and Robert Gray, Ph.D. and Stacy Straughn of Arizona State University. The second study, “Effect of Shoe Type on Kinematics of Stair Negotiation in Women,” provided results of an observational analysis showing that women wearing high-heeled shoes demonstrate a more controlled gait pattern while ascending and descending stairs than when wearing other shoe types, reflecting an apparent greater demand on foot placement and attention to task. The co-authors are Michelle Heller, Sherry DiJorio, Lauren Ciccarelli, and Michael Carhart.
