Dr. Steven Kurtz Given John W. Hyatt Benefit to Society Award

Dr. Steven Kurtz, Principal Engineer, Corporate Vice President, and Director of the Philadelphia office, was recently awarded the John W. Hyatt Benefit to Society Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers. Dr. Kurtz has contributed notably to the characterization and understanding of medical plastics, the state of the art in orthopedic and spinal implants, and the education and training of engineers, thus directly impacting the advancement of medical device technology. His research has contributed to improved levels of understanding of the physical properties, degradation, and real-world performance of key medical plastics, including UHMWPE, polyurethanes, and PEEK.

Exponent Engineers Interviewed On CCTV-9 Regarding Sichuan Earthquake

Betsy Mathieson, Senior Managing Engineer and an Engineering Geologist in Exponent’s Oakland office, and Dave Sykora, Principal Engineer in the Irvine office , were interviewed on English-broadcast, state-run China Central Television (CCTV-9, www.cctv.com) regarding last week’s Sichuan Earthquake (magnitude 8.0) and the likelihood of landslides.

Exponent Scientists Chairing/Presenting at MARM 2008

MARM 2008

Dr. Steven Carlo (Mechanical Engineering & Materials/Metallurgy Practices, Bowie) will be chairing two sessions on "Industrial Chemistry" at MARM 2008 (Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society) May 17–21, at Queensborough Community College, Bayside, NY. The first session will be dedicated to presentations of industrial research with emphasis on the applied nature of our work and how it relates to everyday life. Dr. Jason Clevenger (Mechanical Engineering & Materials/Metallurgy Practices, Natick) will present a talk entitled "A Changing World, A Changing Industry: The Role of Chemistry in Failure Analysis Consulting." There will also be speakers from the FBI, PA Consultants, Grant Industries Silicones, and Arkema. In the afternoon, Dr. Carlo will chair a panel discussion to allow students and other interested attendees to talk to the morning's speakers and find out about life in industry.

Exponent Engineer Featured Speaker at NIOSH Award Ceremony

Dr. Robert Montgomery, Senior Managing Engineer in Exponent’s Washington, DC office, was the keynote speaker at the May 1st NIOSH awards ceremony. The National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) ceremony recognizes projects over the past year that demonstrated scientific excellence of technical and instructional materials by NIOSH scientists and engineers, outstanding service by an individual in the occupational safety and health field, and exceptional efforts by NIOSH researchers and our partners in applying occupational safety and health research to the prevention of workplace fatalities, illnesses, or injuries. His speech was entitled “Safety and Health, Finance, and International Development: The Three “Do” Meet”. Dr. Montgomery specializes in large-scale complex and controversial international projects in a broad range of sectors including oil and gas, construction, infrastructure, and financial institutions. He has conducted more than 300 projects across 35 countries in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. His 25 years of international experience has focused primarily on helping private-sector companies and financial institutions manage the environmental, health and safety, social, and labor aspects of their businesses to ensure sustainable development and successful operations.
