Professional Profile

Dr. Kimmel has more than 35 years experience in reproductive and developmental toxicology, children’s environmental health, and risk assessment, and is an internationally recognized expert in these areas. Dr. Kimmel’s laboratory research has included a number of studies on the causes and mechanisms of developmental toxicology and developmental neurotoxicology, with a focus on the effects of pharmaceuticals and environmental chemicals. She led the National Toxicology Program’s Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology Program from 1980 to 1984. From 1984 to 2004, she was a Senior Scientist in the National Center for Environmental Assessment, US EPA, where she worked on advances in risk assessment approaches and development of risk assessment guidelines for noncancer health effects, particularly reproductive and developmental toxicity and neurotoxicity risk assessment. During that time, she worked on several specific risk assessments for pesticides and industrial chemicals.

Dr. Kimmel co-chaired the Developmental Disorders Working Group of the President’s Task Force on Environmental Health Risks and Safety Risks to Children, which called for the development of a long-term study of children’s environmental health. She then worked as the EPA lead for the interagency effort to plan, implement, and conduct the National Children’s Study (NCS), a longitudinal study to investigate the effects of a broad range of environmental factors on children’s health and development from before birth to adulthood.

Following her retirement from EPA in 2004, Dr. Kimmel has continued to consult with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the lead agency for NCS, and has worked as an independent consultant on issues related to reproductive and developmental toxicology, children’s health, and risk assessment for industry, government and the World Health Organization. She has also served on expert panels for the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council to evaluate health and safety issues related to environmental contaminants. Dr. Kimmel is Past President of the Teratology Society, the Neurobehavioral Teratology Society, and the Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology.
