Hard-Weather Jack Up Rig

This project involved a breach of contract litigation between an oil company and the manufacturer of an off-shore jackup rig. The oil company allegedly terminated its contract with the manufacturer for the just-delivered harsh-weather jackup rig. The oil company claimed the manufacturer breached its contract by delivering the giant rig with faulty equipment and three months behind schedule. The rig was the largest of its type in the world upon completion.  Exponent addressed issues related to a blowout preventer as well as a new design in the way that bull gears, pinions and gear box were constructed for use in jacking up the rig once it was in place. The jacking system consisted of 3-legs that allowed the platform to be raised and lowered. Each of the three legs had 3 gearing units in place. Exponent provided technical consulting on behalf of the oil company related to how the jacking system operated. The litgation settled out of court.
