The PEPCON Explosion

On May 4, 1988, a massive fire and a series of explosions, the largest exceeding the equivalent of 1.5 million pounds of TNT, destroyed a chemical plant in Henderson, Nevada, killed two people and caused more than $70 million in damages to the surrounding community. Exponent conducted an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and explosions and concluded that a leak in a natural gas pipeline which passed underneath the plant contributed to the explosion.
