Professional Profile


Bioengineering
Dr. McGowan addresses bioengineering issues involving human injury, with particular expertise in the areas of traumatic brain injury and imaging, general human tolerance, occupant kinematics, and electric shock injury. His work includes analysis of traumatic injuries associated with transportation, heavy equipment, plant operations, consumer products including watercraft, and electrical distribution, He has authored more than one hundred publications including studies of brain trauma, brain disorders, quantitative applications of magnetic resonance imaging, electric shock injury, and biomechanics associated with transportation-related injuries. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Neuroradiology and an elected Senior Member of the IEEE. He has been licensed as a Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania since 1988 and in Alabama since 2007.

Power Plant Engineering
Dr. McGowan served as an officer in the United States Navy Nuclear Power Program, obtaining qualification in submarines and as Engineer of a nuclear powered submarine. He served as a Division Director at the Naval Nuclear Power School. He gained further experience in the nuclear industry as a Senior Engineer with the General Electric Company and filled key supervisory roles in construction, startup, and test operations at three commercial nuclear plants where he was certified Senior Reactor Operator.

Academic and Military
Dr. McGowan is currently serving as a Visiting Research Associate Professor of Bioengineering at Drexel University within the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems. Prior to joining Exponent, he held the rank of Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the United States Naval Academy. He was appointed as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where his responsibilities included membership in the Graduate Group of Bioengineering, School of Engineering and Applied Science. He was principal and co-principal investigator on grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health in the areas of imaging, traumatic brain injury, and brain disorders. Dr. McGowan retired from the naval service with the rank of Captain (O-6) following 31 years of active and reserve service.
