A Delta wide-body L1011 jet aircraft was one of several planes
in the pattern to land at the Dallas/Ft Worth Airport in August
1985. As the jet made its final approach to the runway, a
heavy rain, along with a strong downburst of air, called a
micro-burst, developed suddenly ahead of it. The pilot was
forced to put the aircraft nose down to gain airspeed and
avoid a stall. Unfortunately, the plane did not have enough
altitude for it to recover. The crash and ensuing fire killed
134 people. Exponent used data from the on-board digital flight
data recorder ("black box") to describe the path and altitude
of the aircraft during the event.
