The Exxon Valdez accident in March 1988 was considered to be one of the worst environmental catastrophes of all time. Exponent inspected the structure of the 987-foot vessel and constructed a three-dimensional finite element model of the deformation of the undercarriage based on measurements and other information. Another team surveyed the reef where the grounding occurred to obtain a three-dimensional map of the grounding location.
