Murray R. Dunn

Principal Scientist

Technology Development

Professional Profile

Mr. Dunn began his career working in the application of optics to problems of strategic national importance. These projects included systems for long-range optical communications with submerged ballistic missile submarines, anti-missile and anti-satellite laser weapon systems, and remote sensing and optical tracking systems for distinguishing ballistic missile reentry vehicle warheads from decoys. Most recently, Mr. Dunn has worked on multi-static sonar systems for detection of ultra-quiet diesel electric submarines. He has worked on all aspects of these projects including concept development, systems engineering, detailed design, fabrication, testing, and program management

Mr. Dunn recently served as Program Manager and Chief Engineer for the U.S. Navy’s Network Enabled Anti-Submarine Warfare (NEASW) system; an advanced submarine detection sonar. Prior technical responsibilities included systems engineering related to technology enhancements for U.S. Army infantry soldiers including: advanced weapons sighting capability, communication, navigation, situational awareness, soldier information systems, IFF systems, and threat warning sensors.

Prior to joining Exponent, Mr. Dunn was a Senior Scientist at ThermoTrex, Inc. where he worked as project scientist on programs including adaptive optical systems for laser weapons, communications, remote sensing, and astronomy applications; optical tracking systems for anti-ballistic missile systems; optical bullet tracking systems for sniper detection and location; laser radars; optical interferometry; optics and optio-mechanical design; signal processing; retinal cameras and retinal scanning imagers, and medical ultrasonic imaging.
