Avtex Fibers Superfund Site Feasibility Study by Exponent
The Avtex Fibers Superfund Site Feasibility Study by Exponent
is underway in Front Royal, Virginia. Field crews sampled
groundwater this summer, and in November, will be sampling
the contents of several disposal ponds that hold "waste viscose,"
a soft, rubber-like by-product of rayon manufacturing that
is releasing contaminants to groundwater. The Exponent team
has submitted for agency approval the Laboratory Treatability
and Analysis Plan, under which various innovative remedial
strategies for dealing with the waste viscose will be evaluated.
Those strategies include, among others, freezing and excavating
it, electrically heating it to vaporize the contaminants,
and even composting it with worms to convert it to useful
fertilizer. The Feasibility Study is expected to take approximately
3 years from its inception last spring.
