The California
Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has issued a draft
decision on exemptions from rotating outages. They retained
Exponent to evaluate and prioritize requests from business
customers for exemptions from rotating outages based on potential

Ali Reza, P.E. Appointed Office Director
Mr. Ali Reza, P.E.
has been appointed Office Director of Exponent's Southern
California offices. He specializes in the engineering analysis
of fires, explosions and detonations. Much of his research
is focused on studying the cause, origin, and propagation
of fires and explosions, particularly in relation to heat
transfer, gas dynamics and fluid mechanics associated with
combustion processes. He also has specialized expertise in
the design and performance evaluation of combustion devices
including pressure vessels, boilers, heating systems and home
appliances. Mr. Reza has investigated several hundred fire
or explosion incidents including chemical plant incidents,
dust explosions, munitions disposal/ accidental ignition and
residential or commercial fires. Mr. Reza has been a member
of Exponent's Fires & Explosions practice for 12 years and
will continue his consulting activities.
Dr. David Sykora
The Irvine office welcomes David
W. Sykora, Ph.D., G.E., Managing Engineer, to Exponent's
Civil/Structural Engineering practice. Dr. Sykora joined Exponent
specializes in and earthquake engineering as well as the evaluation
of failures and natural disasters. He has a wide range of
project experience in the planning, feasibility assessment,
analysis, design, construction, and monitoring phases for
new and existing projects.
