The images presented here are “intensity maps” showing the Modified Mercalli groundshaking intensities of several well-known earthquakes in California compared to the recent earthquakes in India and Washington State. The images are presented at approximately the same scale for comparative purposes. The wide distribution of strong groundshaking in the Gujarat earthquake clearly far exceeds some of the recent damaging earthquakes in the United States. It is left to the imagination the likely consequences of Gujarat-level earthquake centered in the Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle Metropolitan areas.
