  • Patent evaluation and infringement review
  • Power electronic systems for industrial and electric utility applications
  • Process control equipment malfunctions
  • Technical due diligence reviews
  • Telecommunication systems
  • Transmission line licensing studies

We operate laboratories for testing both moderately heavy electrical equipment, appliances and light electronic equipment. Computers and specialized software are used to analyze electric power systems, circuits and other equipment configurations.

Electric Power Systems Typical assignments include fault current calculations for industrial power systems, preparation of power flow studies and investigation of equipment under emergency conditions. We also perform technical studies required by regulatory agencies reviewing applications for new or upgraded transmission lines.

Electrical Equipment These include large and small generators, motors, transformers, switch gears and motor drives. Typical investigations include failures of insulation systems as well as conductors and auxiliary systems. On the consumer side, we provide analyses of residential and commercial appliances.

Uninterruptible Power Systems We have been working in the area of power quality since its inception. Our services include analyzing the quality of utility services to industrial customers, the design and testing of equipment as well as the analyses of voltage feeders.

Automotive and Transporation System Electronics With railroads, mining equipment and automobile designs increasingly utilizing power electronics and computers, Exponent’s engineers work directly with both manufacturers, users and others involved with transportation systems and equipment. Examples of our work include the analyses and testing of emission equipment, pressure sensors for airbags and ignitions, electric drives, and auxiliary equipment.

Printed Circuit Boards We have developed techniques for determining the root cause of a failure, the sequence of events leading to a failure, and changes that will reduce the probability of a failure in future designs.

Semiconductor Devices Our staff analyzes failure modes of semiconductor devices and the circuits in which they are utilized for high power, electric utility and transportation applications as well for industries both in Silicon Valley and around the world.

Power Supplies and Batteries Whether a power supply or battery suffers a failure in the field, or the client is looking for a way to improve their product, or bringing a new product to market, Exponent assists with analyses of current or potential designs. Click here to find out more...

Prototypes We have investigated thousands of failures in electrical or electronic equipment. By evaluating the designs of prototypes and performing specific tests, likely, but unanticipated failures are often identified.
