Exposure assessment is the science of estimating human exposure to chemical, physical, and biological agents, accounting for the frequency, magnitude, and duration of the exposure events. Exposure estimates can be compared to toxicity benchmarks or guidelines to assess potential risks to human health, and are used for many purposes, including in epidemiology, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance. In the early days of risk assessment, the evaluation of chemical exposure focused simply on the toxicology of substances. As the field of risk assessment has evolved, the assessment of exposure has taken an increasingly important role and sophisticated methods are being applied to improve exposure estimates, thus reducing or minimizing uncertainty in health risk estimates. Exposure is measured in different ways depending on the expected route of exposure.
