To investigate the entire crash sequence associated with on-road
or off-road rollovers, we developed a test methodology utilizing
a crashworthy steering controller. This technology allows high-speed
rollovers to be created with precise steering control, and without
the limitations required for the safety of human drivers, such
as the need for outriggers. The automated steering controller
is currently configured for installation in the passenger compartment
of a test vehicle, but could be modified for installation in
the engine compartment, allowing for testing with anthropomorphic
dummies.
