Services & Capabilities:

Test programs at Exponent's TEC are successful due to the integrated support of the following laboratories and their skilled personnel:
Mechanical fabrication and vehicle prep
The TEC mechanical shop facilities and equipment provide capabilities from machining and sheet metal work to heavy structural welding and cutting for the fabrication of prototype components and specialized test hardware. Exponent’s TEC has several multi-bay automotive garages equipped with hydraulic frame and chassis lifts, a tire changer, engine tune-up equipment, and a full complement of tools to prepare and modify vehicles for testing.
Instrumentation and data processing
The TEC has a variety of data acquisition systems, some of which have been developed in-house. Data collection for crash testing is accomplished with onboard digital data acquisition systems designed for and qualified to 100-g shock levels. Exponent provides instrumentation and acquisition equipment for up to 192 channels per test, and user-selectable acquisition frequencies up to 80 kHz. The TEC data processing center produces draft data plots of all recorded data within 30 minutes of test completion. Test data is processed in conformance with SAE J211 specifications, and can be analyzed with a variety of data processing functions, including injury criteria.
Test dummy certification and prep
Exponent maintains an environmentally-controlled dummy laboratory that is equipped for maintenance and calibration of dummies used in dynamic testing. Exponent’s dummy inventory includes an assortment of Hybrid III dummies of various adult and child sizes, as well as Hybrid II dummies and side impact dummies.
Photography and photometric analysis
The photographic laboratory at Exponent’s TEC is equipped with various video, still, and motion picture equipment. High-speed 16-mm film and video at rates up to 11,000 frames per second (fps) are used to record crash test or other dynamic events. A NAC motion analyzer with MOVIAS software and Exponent post-processing software is used to analyze dummy and vehicle motions recorded on film.
