Dr. David Bauer has a Ph.D. in Chemistry and over 38 years of experience in characterization and failure analysis of paints, plastics, rubber, composites, and adhesives. During his 29 years in the Ford Motor Company Research Laboratory, he not only led major programs in basic material research, but also applied that knowledge to the development of material standards and to the resolution of numerous material and production issues. Since joining Exponent in 2007, Dr. Bauer provides expert consulting services in a wide variety of polymeric material characterization and failure analysis areas including defect and contamination analysis, polymer degradation, and adhesion failures.

Dr. Bauer has made important contributions to the understanding of UV degradation, thermal oxidation, and hydrolysis of polymers. Along with developing new approaches to measuring material degradation, Dr. Bauer has taken the results of accelerated tests and used them to accurately determine field performance. He has applied this research to the development of material performance standards for paints and tires. He has published more than 115 papers in peer-reviewed journals and made more than 150 presentations in a wide range of areas including paint cure, paint rheology, paint weathering, plastics characterization, plastics failure analysis, and tire aging. He has edited two books on service life prediction in coatings and has won two of the major awards in Coatings Science: the Roy Tess Award in Coatings and the Mattiello Lecture.
