Dr. Chilin’s current work focus within Exponent’s Engineering Management Consulting practice is on oil & gas/chemical/petrochemical risk assessment projects including HAZOP studies, SIL Determination and Verification studies, and QRA studies. His chemical engineering background encompasses a diverse skillset ranging from metabolic engineering to semiconductor micro-fabrication.

Dr. Chilin also specializes in chemical process modeling and fault tolerant control, using mathematical and computational methods. Dr. Chilin’s research on advanced process control at the University of California, Los Angeles involved building process models based on first principles, and developing distributed model predictive control systems for cost reduction and profit improvement. In his research work, Dr. Chilin used statistics-based fault detection to detect abnormal operating conditions and mitigate fault damage.

Previously, Dr. Chilin held an engineering position within Amgen’s Global Process Engineering Group. During his 4+ years at Amgen, Dr. Chilin’s responsibilities included planning and executing characterization studies in support of regulatory compliance (NC/CAPA), drug product stability, process FMEAs, and technology development. Dr. Chilin’s other professional experience includes clean room maintenance, characterization of PVD systems, separation unit operations, analytical methods for proteins and small molecules, recombinant DNA techniques, and semiconductor micro-fabrication techniques.
