Dr. Garcia specializes in in vitro and in vivo characterization of polymer interactions with cells and tissues. She has experience with in vitro assays (including cell proliferation, migration, attachment, and matrix production) and assessment of ocular health through non-invasive tests such as electroretinograms, high frequency ultrasound, and ocular coherence tomography.

Her doctoral research was an interdisciplinary collaboration between bioengineering and vision science, investigating nearsightedness control by promoting regeneration of the sclera (white outer shell of the eye) through injectable degradable polymers. As part of that project, she led the development of a guinea pig nearsightedness disease model. Dr. Garcia also has experience with the establishment and routine operations of USDA-regulated animal colonies, establishment and maintenance of primary mammalian cell culture lines, and confocal microscopy. 

Dr. Garcia has a B.S. in Bioengineering from the Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in Vision Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
