Dr. Jaekel specializes in failure analysis, design evaluation, and validation of medical devices in orthopedic, spinal, cardiovascular, and fracture fixation applications. He has extensive experience in polymer composite fabrication, materials characterization techniques, and bacterial growth on biomaterial surfaces for orthopaedic and spinal applications. He has assisted clients in evaluating device performance through mechanical testing, material assessment, and cadaveric experimentation.

Dr. Jaekel’s doctoral research at Drexel University focused on developing silver composite polyetheretherketone (PEEK) biomaterials and investigating the effects of the inclusion silver particulates on bacterial adherence and biofilm formation through SEM analysis and cell culture. Additionally, his doctoral research involved direct manufacturing of composite materials with high temperature injection molding, extrusion, and compression molding methods. Dr. Jaekel’s early graduate work involved the development and validation of novel test methods for measuring crystallinity using specular reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and characterizing mechanical behavior with the small punch test in PEEK biomaterials.

Dr. Jaekel also has experience with retrieval analysis of implanted medical devices, specifically in the evaluation of performance and in vivo damage modalities of spinal implants, hip and knee replacements, and articulating antibiotic bone cement spacers. Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Jaekel worked as a product development engineer for a start-up firm designing a minimally invasive hydrogel spinal nucleus implant. While there, he developed annealing processes to enhance the mechanical strength of the hydrogel and designed custom mechanical test frames for cadaveric testing of spinal implants to simulate environmental loading.
