Mr. Lau has over 25 years of experience conducting statistical analyses of a broad range of health and safety problems. Specializing in large-scale data analyses, he has developed an extensive body of research in health services and epidemiology using administrative healthcare databases. In particular, he has produced more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and presentations based on Medicare data in collaboration with clinical investigators at Harvard, Mayo Clinic, and other leading research institutions. He is especially recognized for his analyses of the utilization of hip and knee arthroplasty in the US, estimating future demands for these procedures, and modeling risks of perioperative complications. This work has been supported by major medical device manufacturers, academic surgeons, and the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation.

For their research on orthopedics using Medicare and other national databases, Mr. Lau and colleagues have twice been honored with the Lawrence D. Dorr, MD, Award from the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons for the most outstanding paper in surgical techniques and technologies. In addition to his work in the orthopedic area, he has also been involved in many other areas of health research, including the study of complications associated with implantable cardiac devices, glaucoma, macular degeneration and other eye diseases, and osteoporotic spine fractures. Mr. Lau is also recognized for his work on many epidemiologic studies examining associations of various human health outcomes with environmental and occupational exposures. Among his notable studies in this area are investigations of brain cancer among workers in the petrochemical industry, lung cancer risk in association with chromium and diesel exhaust exposures, health effects of perchlorate on newborns, and cancer mortality in relation to oil production activities.

Mr. Lau has a thorough command and deep experience using health insurance claims data, inpatient/outpatient data, health surveillance data, and many other state, national, and international health-related databases. He excels in querying these databases and extracting critical information to help address research questions on health outcomes, costs of care, treatment patterns, and other health issues. A SAS user for nearly three decades, Mr. Lau is also an expert in the SAS programming language and related statistical procedures, and he serves as Exponent’s SAS representative and education coordinator.

In addition to his consulting work on epidemiologic studies, Mr. Lau also is also actively involved in automotive safety studies. His consulting work has involved applying statistical methods to address significant vehicular design and occupant protection issues. Mr. Lau conducted an industry-wide safety and benefit analyses on antilock brakes, and was the principal investigator in the first comprehensive study in the U.S. on the effectiveness of daytime running lights. He has collaborated regularly with other experts in biomechanics, accident reconstruction, and engineering mechanics in the study of seat belt designs, rollover injury factors, automotive fire risks, and under-ride protection effectiveness.
