Dr. Leister specializes in failure analysis, metallurgy, microscopy, and mechanical properties of materials, with an expertise in ferrous metallurgy and welding. In addition, he has experience with thermo-mechanical simulation techniques, mechanical testing, metallographic sample preparation, and optical and electron microscopy.

Dr. Leister received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering both from Lehigh University. His Ph.D. research combined thermo-mechanical simulation, optical and electron microscopy, and mechanical testing to correlate the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution, including carbide characterization at the nano-scale, in the heat affected zone in welds of a new ultra-high strength steel. Dr. Leister’s M.S. research focused on the correlation of fracture toughness and microstructure in the heat affected zone in welds of a copper-precipitation strengthened steel. 

While in graduate school, Dr. Leister was a teaching assistant for courses in failure analysis and materials selection. In addition, he taught a metallography course which focused on sample preparation techniques, microscopy skills, and various aspects of mechanical testing, including tensile testing, Charpy impact testing, Rockwell and micro-indentation hardness testing, and fracture toughness testing.
