Dr. Lopez-Garrity specializes in failure analysis, materials science, and corrosion science, with an emphasis on corrosion monitoring, testing, evaluation, and protection. His corrosion expertise includes general and localized corrosion, galvanic corrosion, atmospheric corrosion, and different types of corrosion protection (including coatings and corrosion inhibitors). He is well-versed in the examination of corrosion processes using various electrochemical techniques including impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. In addition, Dr. Lopez-Garrity has extensive experience utilizing numerous surface sensitive and bulk material characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.

Dr. Lopez-Garrity has applied his materials, corrosion, and engineering skills to investigate and prevent failures related to medical devices, oil and gas pipeline, boilers, plumbing systems, consumer electronics, architectural materials, and automotive components. He has experience performing corrosion evaluations on various devices using electrochemical and metallographic techniques, including biomedical implants for FDA approval.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Lopez-Garrity completed his graduate studies at the Fontana Corrosion Center in the department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University. His thesis work involved developing and understanding chromate-free corrosion inhibitors for aerospace aluminum alloys. Additionally, Dr. Lopez-Garrity was a teaching assistant for both undergraduate and graduate level corrosion courses, and for an undergraduate materials characterization lab.
