Ms. Mathieson has more than 30 years of experience in engineering geologic and environmental geologic consulting for residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and government properties and facilities. Ms. Mathieson specializes in surface and subsurface site characterization (soil, rock, and groundwater), landslide and debris flow investigations, erosion investigations, fault investigations, sinkhole investigations, expansive soil investigations, hazard mapping, site history analysis, subsurface differing site conditions claims, third party reviews, and management of multidisciplinary project teams.

Ms. Mathieson’s expertise includes geologic and geomorphic analysis using aerial photography, LIDAR, and field mapping; subsurface exploration including logging of trenches and borings (including descent into large-diameter borings and deep foundation excavations); and investigation of structures for evidence of ground movement. She has investigated failures involving oil and gas pipelines; water supply pipelines and tanks; storm drain pipelines; dams; retaining walls; residential, commercial, and industrial foundations; highways (including fatal vehicle accidents); tunnels; and open-pit mines. Risks evaluated include landsliding (including mudflows or mudslides, debris flows, rockslides, and rockfalls), coastal erosion, streambank erosion and streambed scour, sediment deposition, groundwater seepage, sinkholes in karst terrain and over pipelines, surface fault rupture and fault creep, liquefaction and lateral spreading, expansive and collapsible soils, industrial debris accumulation, and the effects of wildland fires. Ms. Mathieson draws on her experience in pre-development investigations and post-construction failure analysis, as well as knowledge gained during her professional service to State boards and commissions, to evaluate issues related to standard of care for engineering geologists.

Project Experience

Evaluated causes of landslides and storm damage including bridge collapses and culvert failures.

Served as project geologist for integrity analysis of recently constructed parallel pipelines carrying natural gas and liquid natural gas (LNG) from the Amazon jungle over the Andes mountain range to the Pacific coast of Peru. Reviewed pre- and post-construction geologic and geotechnical reports (primarily in Spanish); performed site inspections at 49 remote locations at which repairs of landslides, rockslides, debris flows, and eroded river banks were planned or in progress; evaluated factors that contributed to the occurrence of six LNG pipeline spill incidents, evaluated geotechnical-related risks to the pipelines; evaluated the pipeline operator’s progress toward reducing the risks; and prepared geologic and geotechnical portions of several reports and presentations.

Investigated the causes of the failure of two underground vertical shafts during construction of two replacement water-supply conduits for a major municipal water supply system in the Pacific Northwest. While construction of three lined 80- to 90-foot-deep vertical shafts was ongoing, the steel liner in one of the shafts was found to have buckled and to have partially filled with unidentified solid material; the steel liner of a second shaft was also found to have partially filled with solid material. Performed underground site inspections to observe and document the recovery and repair of the two vertical shafts; logging and sampling of material excavated from the shafts; interviews with the construction contractor’s personnel; review of relevant project specifications, design reports, and construction documents; and geologic analysis.

Investigated the causes and contributing factors to a high-profile rockslide on San Francisco’s Telegraph Hill that engulfed two stories of the back of a row of commercial buildings and threatened to undermine a large condominium building. Reviewed historic and recent geologic and geotechnical reports, building permit records, stereoscopic aerial photographs, rainfall records, topographic survey data, and repair plans; performed several inspections of the site and surrounding areas; analyzed the failure geometry and the percentage of the slide material that originated on various parcels of land; compiled data on various landowners’ pre-slide knowledge of the rockslide hazard; and evaluated the contributions of rainfall and runoff, drainage conditions at the crest of the cliff, a void beneath a patio at the crest of the cliff, and vegetation growing on and above the cliff.

As part of a multi-disciplinary Exponent team, evaluated the fire-flood-erosion sequence accompanying the 1999 fire that occurred in a rugged, forested area near Lewiston, California. The fire began as a prescribed burn set by the Bureau of Land Management that jumped control lines and burned 1,904 forested areas and 23 residences in four days. Exponent evaluated the burn area 2-1/2 years after the fire to document the effects of the fire on the affected watersheds, search for evidence of new landslides and debris flows, and estimate the level of landscape recovery since the fire. Performed an aerial and ground reconnaissance and analyzed erosion potential in the affected areas.

Investigated the causes and contributing factors to a large landslide in Millbrae, California, that began during the wet “El Niño” winter of 1997-1998 at a former quarry that had been developed for residential use in the 1950s. Managed a team of investigators who carried out detailed field mapping of geologic materials and manmade features, drilled and logged deep soil and rock borings in the neighborhood at the crest of the slope, installed piezometers to monitor shallow and deep groundwater levels, reviewed historic and recent geologic and geotechnical reports, prepared geologic maps and cross sections, performed groundwater modeling, performed stability analyses of the slope under various groundwater conditions, and researched the history of quarrying and subdivision development. Interpreted aerial photographs, prepared a detailed chronology of the site history, and reviewed documentation related to various public facilities in and adjacent to the neighborhood.

Investigated the causes and contributing factors to the Ranchito Vista landslide in Santa Barbara, California. The deep-seated bedrock landslide blocked the northbound lane of State Route 144 through Sycamore Canyon, resulting in closure of the road for more than a year. Reviewed historic and recent geologic and geotechnical reports. Analyzed the chronology of landslide movement and repairs, stereoscopic aerial photographs, rainfall records, topographic survey data, exploratory boring logs, laboratory test data, slope inclinometer data, time domain reflectometry data, PSInSAR data, and groundwater data. Performed several inspections of the landslide. Prepared geologic maps and cross sections to evaluate the relative contributions of rainfall, grading, septic leach fields, and other factors to the landslide and to evaluate the effectiveness of various repair alternatives.

Investigated the causes and contributing factors to two debris flows (“mudslides”) that occurred on a steep undeveloped slope behind a subdivision in unincorporated Santa Cruz County, California. Reviewed historic and recent geologic and geotechnical reports and subdivision plans. Performed three inspections of the slope and adjacent areas and documented the locations of the debris flows relative to storm drainage pipes installed during construction and after the first debris flow occurred. Analyzed the potential for future debris flows.

Evaluated reported sinkhole-related damage to a large condominium complex in Tennessee. Coordinated work of Exponent staff, geophysical subsconsultant, and construction cost estimator, and served as liaison with local geotechnical consultant.

Evaluated causes of sinkholes that formed above newly constructed storm drain on State highway project in California’s Central Valley. Investigation included extensive review of contractor’s and inspector’s daily logs prepared during construction.

Performed down-hole logging of large-diameter drill holes in landslides and beneath distressed houses to examine soil and bedrock for evidence of landsliding, to determine depths and physical characteristics of slide planes, and to collect samples of slide-plane material for laboratory testing and subsequent stability analysis. During construction of foundation underpinning, examined sidewalls of pier holes to determine whether embedment was adequate.

Investigated stability of a large landslide beneath a proposed rocket-fuel mixing facility. Work included literature research, air-photo interpretation, geologic field mapping, and logging and sampling of continuous-core drill holes.

Evaluated causes of earthquake-induced ground failures at private residences and government facilities after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area. Ground failures investigated included landslides, ridge-top shattering, deformation of fill, and lateral spread due to liquefaction. Investigated earthquake damage claims after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake in southern California. Evaluated claim of earthquake damage to a water main in a high-rise building after a minor earthquake in Los Angeles. Analyzed extent of damage to a government facility due to liquefaction and lateral spread caused by the 2006 Hawaii earthquake.

Evaluated the merits of subsurface differing site conditions claims on public highway and sewer projects in California’s Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Performed numerous investigations, including: Distressed houses, hillside ranch roads, landslide and debris-flow causation, erosion damage causation, diversion of drainage, over-excavation in quarries, archaeological sites, billing disputes, differing site conditions claims, and a fatal car crash. Work included review of available geologic and engineering information, air photo interpretation, geologic mapping, crawl-space inspections, observation during remedial construction, document review, and presentation of findings.

Performed detailed interpretation of historic aerial photographs of two former oil fields to determine site use history, topographic (development) history including drainage routes, sources and geometry of fill material, and sources and distribution of debris. Correlated air photo findings with historic site plans and descriptions from deposition transcripts.

Provided technical and project management support to assist a Southern California client in identifying, prioritizing, and evaluating potential sources of perchlorate to a municipal well field.

Provided technical and project management support for an environmental cost recovery claim related to discovery of lead impact to soil at a former military base in southern California.

Provided technical support for evaluation of alleged damages to a Central Valley (California) municipality's sole water-supply aquifer from releases of PCE.

Provided technical support for evaluation of allegations of releases of PCE at more than 30 separate locations in a northern California municipality.

Performed numerous Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, including determination of site history from air photos, historic documents, and interviews; site inspections and chemical storage inventories; assessment of nearby facilities; and analysis of potential for existing and future soil and ground water contamination.

Designed and installed monitoring wells at numerous fuel and solvent storage facilities. Conducted soil and ground water sampling and evaluated lateral and vertical extent of various chemicals of interest.

Prepared geologic and ground movement potential maps for the City of Saratoga, California, and geotechnical hazards maps for the City of Milpitas, California.

Supervised fault-rupture hazard investigations, including logging of exploratory trenches to investigate fault locations and activity. Projects ranged from school sites on faults in Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zones to single-family houses adjacent to newly mapped faults.

Performed development-feasibility mapping of large ranches proposed for residential development. Prepared geologic maps and cross sections; evaluated fault, landslide, debris flow, and liquefaction hazards; and constructed development feasibility maps. Served as liaison between clients and agency planning departments.

Performed office and field review of landslide investigation on behalf of subdivision developer’s geologic consultant. Objective was to develop an independent interpretation of unexpected subsurface conditions before consultant submitted report to reviewing agency.
