Dr. Trono specializes in assessing structural failures using advanced computer modeling and rigorous field investigations. Dr. Trono has investigated a wide spectrum of building failures, from structural collapse to the design and in situ performance of architectural materials. He has expertise in the corrosion and durability problems that occur in posttensioned and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Trono examined a number of structures damaged by the 2014 Napa Earthquake in Northern California and his Ph.D. research was devoted to earthquake-resistant design.

Dr. Trono has particular expertise in the analysis, modeling, and performance-based seismic design of reinforced concrete structures. His research involved numerical modeling and testing of post-tensioned reinforced concrete bridge columns designed to re-center after earthquakes in order to eliminate or reduce earthquake damage. He has contributed to three research projects within the Transportation Systems Research Program (TSRP) of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER), including one project involving shake table testing of advanced post-tensioned bridge columns. He has special expertise in the field of high performance fiber reinforced cement composites (HPFRCC), with five years of experience evaluating the structural performance of such materials under seismic loading conditions.

Dr. Trono served as a student instructor for three graduate-level civil engineering courses at UC Berkeley: Civil Engineering Materials, Reinforced Concrete Structures, and Design of Steel and Composite Structures. He has two years of experience as a structural designer at Jacobs Engineering Group and Arup, working on industrial and commercial development projects.
