Merel van der Ploeg
Merel van der Ploeg, Ph.D.
Senior Scientist
Chemical Regulation & Food Safety
  • Harrogate (UK)

Dr. van der Ploeg evaluates ecotoxicological data and conducts environmental risk assessments according to EU legislation for pesticides, biocides, and other chemicals falling under the scope of the REACH regulation. She has a background in both practical and regulatory ecotoxicology. Prior to joining Exponent, she worked at the board for the authorization of plant protection products and biocides (Ctgb) in the Netherlands, as a scientific assessor environment. Within this position, she evaluated environmental fate and effects of biocidal products and reviewed the European dossiers of active substances (CARs) for biocidal products from other member states. Her role also involved the evaluation of ecotoxicological studies and the risk assessment of plant protection product for the Dutch market.

Before joining Ctgb, Dr. van der Ploeg was a Ph.D. student, researching the hazards of nanoparticle exposure to soil organisms. Through this research she gained experience in conducting, reporting, and interpreting terrestrial ecotoxicological studies.
