Dr. Yee’s specialized expertise in the area of vehicle engineering includes vehicle telematics, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication systems, and automated vehicles. Since joining Exponent in 2014, he has leveraged his experience in accident reconstruction to consult with clients on vehicle telematics, conduct reviews of Federal and State vehicle regulations as they apply to automotive products, and analyze vehicle requirements in their development process. His broader project experience includes the reconstruction of crashes involving passenger cars and heavy trucks, event data recorder (EDR) and engine control module (ECM) data analysis, automotive sled testing and simulations of vehicle crashes using the Human Vehicle Environment (HVE) software package.
Dr. Yee’s current interests in the area of connected and automated vehicles include the future of EDRs from an accident reconstruction and failure analysis perspective. He has published on the topic of the use of ADAS sensor data to reconstruct vehicle crashes, and has conducted experiments to assist in the development of analysis techniques required to analyze such data. He is a member of SAE’s Active Safety Test Target Committee.
A nuclear engineer by training, he has also led projects at Exponent involving the development and reliability testing of radiation detectors. Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Yee was a Scientist at Rapiscan Laboratories, where he developed nuclear techniques to detect contraband and special nuclear material in cargo containers, using a combination of Monte Carlo simulations and proof-of-concept experiments. Past projects have included the development of algorithms to detect special nuclear material by fusing data from multiple cargo inspection systems using both x-ray and neutron interrogation.
Dr. Yee obtained his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley, where he also held a Lawrence Scholarship at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to perform his thesis work. His thesis work entitled “Beta-delayed neutron spectroscopy using trapped radioactive ions” straddled basic and applied nuclear science, with an eye toward improving nuclear data for applications in reactors, Homeland Security, and stockpile stewardship.
Dr. Yee is an avid autocross racer and has coached novice drivers with the Golden Gate Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America. He also regularly competes with the Sports Car Club of America and the Porsche Club of America, and brings with him a passion for automotive engineering.
