Dr. Sharma specializes in continuum mechanics, constitutive modeling, finite element analysis, and failure analysis of engineering materials and structures. He has applied his expertise to the stress and life analysis of aviation engine components, solid state lighting products, medical devices, and consumer electronics. Since he joined Exponent in September 2011, Dr. Sharma has applied his skills to stress and deformation analysis of consumer electronics and medical devices, constitutive modeling of geomechanical materials, and stress analysis of flywheels. Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Sharma worked as Mechanical Engineer in General Electric Global Research, where he contributed to the life analysis of aviation engine components, and also contributed to the design and reliability assessment of actively cooled solid state lighting products under a program funded by the Department of Energy. In his doctoral dissertation, Dr. Sharma investigated toughening mechanisms in micro-layered and particulate polymeric composites. As part of his dissertation, he developed constitutive models and implemented them within a finite element framework by writing user material subroutines for several polymeric materials.
