Dr. Sandra J. Hong is a Managing Scientist in Exponent’s Health Sciences Center for Toxicology and Mechanistic Biology. Dr. Hong has over 10 years of consulting experience, performing risk assessments and toxicology evaluations of numerous industrial chemicals and petroleum products. Dr. Hong’s experience at Exponent covers a wide range of toxicants, including chemical mixtures, aromatic hydrocarbons, pathogens in water, and metals in the environment.
In the petrochemical industry, Dr. Hong’s work focused on product stewardship risk assessments and laboratory methods development. Dr. Hong refined short-term test methodologies and data analysis approaches for predicting the carcinogenic potential of petroleum streams based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons content. Dr. Hong also investigated the dermal sensitization potential of a range of industrial chemicals, and for two years led the toxicology emergency response team in responding to health concerns arising from accidental spills, explosions, and worker exposures.
Dr. Hong’s doctoral training focused on the neuroactivity of organic compounds, including dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, and organophosphorus pesticides and chemical warfare agents. Dr. Hong has also conducted behavioral research on monkeys in the study of learning and memory processes, and the neuroanatomical mechanisms underlying the observations.
