Reservoir & Levee Breach Modeling
Sudden and unexpected flooding resulting from the breach of a reservoir, levee, or large-volume tank can have dire effects on downstream communities and ecosystems. Extreme storm events or seismic activity are examples of incidents that can trigger breaches of reservoirs, levees, or tanks. Exponent’s water resources team is skilled in performing analyses of the risks associated with potential breaches to develop an understanding of the expected flow paths, velocities, and flood depths that could result. We utilize state-of-the-art tools and methods to develop numerical models to simulate breaches and use visualization and animation tools to graphically illustrate the results of our analysis.
Exponent works closely with our clients to develop strategies to mitigate flood risks and develop emergency response protocols. Collaboration with Exponent’s geotechnical and structural engineers and seismic design experts provides our clients with a suite of services that address project-specific needs in a seamless and efficient manner.
Our services include:
- Numerical modeling of flood waters using one- and two-dimensional model
- Dam break and levee breach modeling
- Analysis of the stability of dams and levee
- Structural analysis of fluid storage tanks and reservoir
- Risk analysis
- Graphical rendering and animation of results
