Sensors & Sensor Systems

Exponent has consultants in all areas of integrated sensor systems, from the cleanroom fabrication involved in making modern Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and Solid State sensors, to real-world signals analysis, to high-level logic control system using complex sensors. Sensors are an increasingly-pervasive part of modern life and are used in many embedded system applications, such as industrial control, consumer electronics, medical devices, automotive systems, appliances, and more. For example, many cellular telephones have a high-fidelity nine-axis sensor that monitors three axes of rotation, acceleration, and magnetic field. Medical devices use miniaturized pressure, flow, and temperature sensors to improve diagnosis and treatment through measurements from inside the patient. In automobiles, hundreds of sensors consistently monitor the automobile and drivers state and allowing embedded systems to make real-time adjustments to performance. In industry applications, remote sensing is proving useful for electrical grid operators to watch load conditions in real time. Fiber-optic sensors are regularly employed in oil and gas drilling to receive critical telemetry from the drill-head.
