Both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation have important industrial, medical, and consumer applications, but there has been growing concern in recent years regarding the environmental and human health risks posed by these two forms of radiation. For example, natural disasters, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, and the threat of terrorism have dominated the discussions surrounding nuclear plant safety and associated releases of ionizing radiation (radionuclides) into the surrounding environment. Due to increasing reliance on technology, concerns have been raised regarding the increasing opportunity for humans and other forms of life to interface with power- and radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and its implications. Radiation science is complex and a specialized skillset is required in order to adequately advise stakeholders on related matters. Whether it is for applied research, regulatory compliance, community outreach, crisis management, or litigation support.
