Interview Process
Exponent looks for talented graduate students and recent graduates who possess the technical, problem solving, communication, and leadership skills required to become successful consultants. We best describe our interview process as rigorous and thorough. As such, we have designed our interviews to gain a better understanding of your technical background and career interests. We are also equally committed to help you discover if our organization is right for you. Throughout the process you will have an opportunity to meet and speak with many consultants from relevant disciplines.

Informal Interview

Our interview process begins with an informal interview, either by phone, on-site, or on campus. This may be with one or more of our consultants or a Human Resources professional. We view the informal interview as an exploratory meeting between you and Exponent. It is a way for both parties to learn more about each other and determine if we should proceed with a formal interview. We also offer opportunities to meet with us on campus at information sessions, seminars, networking events, and career fairs at many universities across the country. We encourage you to introduce yourself at these events.

Formal Interview

Based on the informal interview, we may extend an invitation to you for a formal, full-day on-site interview. The interview day consists of 6-10 one-on-one interviews, each approximately 30 minutes in length, with our consultants and Human Resources staff. You will have an opportunity to meet with individuals from a range of relevant practices and disciplines, in order to gain different perspectives about life at Exponent. We encourage you to ask questions. Every candidate will give a technical presentation as well. We will also give you a tour of our facility.

Technical Presentation

In addition to the one-on-one interviews, we also require you to give a 30-45 minute technical presentation on a topic of your choice. Such topics may include your thesis/dissertation, previous research, or project work. Please note that we highly discourage you from making presentations on proprietary material. You will be presenting to a technical audience of consultants. Some of them may know your technical material very well and others may only have a peripheral understanding. We encourage you to include both big picture information as well as the technical details of your research. Consultants from other offices may participate through web conferencing as well. Please be prepared to respond to questions from our consultants throughout your presentation.

After the Interview

After your formal interview, our interview team decides on whether or not to extend an employment offer. Within two weeks after your interview you can expect to hear back from Exponent regarding the status of your candidacy with our firm. Please be sure to communicate any job search deadlines (i.e. pending offers) to Human Resources so that we can get back to you within your specified timeline.
