Bad Vibrations: Designing for Floor Vibrations Caused By Concerts
March 21, 2018
Dr. Charles DeVore, Senior Engineer in Exponent’s Buildings and Structures practice, recently authored an article "Bad Vibrations" in STRUCTURE.

Floor vibrations offer a worst case scenario when it comes to human-caused floor vibrations. Large groups of people are arranged in close proximity and their motion is synchronized by the beat of the music. This can result in large vibrations that can disrupt the building’s use. The article discusses the design and analysis of floor vibrations caused by concerts. The current design practice is discussed in terms of consensus standards and best practices are identified. Please contact Charles DeVore, Ph.D., P.E. for more information about Exponent’s capabilities related to noise and vibration investigations within buildings.
