Dr. Charles Menzie Refocuses Expert Consulting Practice
Over the past 6 years, Dr. Charles Menzie has served as the Global Executive Director of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) while continuing as a principal in the Ecological and Biological Sciences Practice at Exponent. SETAC is the largest and preeminent global society of environmental scientists (5,300 members in over 100 countries). Dr. Menzie has led initiatives and developed business-academic-government partnerships and membership in developed and developing countries. Most notable are his efforts to advance knowledge of risk-based approaches for supporting chemical management and environmental decisions. During this same period, Dr. Menzie has continued to mentor scientists at Exponent and served as a consulting and testifying expert on a diverse array of complex projects. Dr. Menzie brings over 40 years of experience to these efforts. Dr. Menzie will be leaving his obligations at SETAC in September 2020.
Dr. Menzie’s practice at Exponent will focus on three areas:
- Serving as an expert and leading expert panels in support of facilitation, arbitration, and independent review. Dr. Menzie has extensive experience in this role and his capability reflects a combination of interpersonal skills and broad knowledge of environmental sciences.
- Serving as a consulting or testifying expert for more complex environmental cases. Dr. Menzie has served in this role for over thirty years with cases before the International Court of Justice, the U.S. Supreme Court, and federal and state courts throughout the United States.
- Providing strategic technical expertise to inform matters at the science and policy/regulatory interface. Much of this work relates to development of new laws such as the updated Toxic Substance Control Act (the Lautenberg Act); regulations governing metals, pesticides, and PCBs; nutrient management programs; and the reuse of waste materials.
One of Dr. Menzie’s greatest strengths is assembling and leading multi-disciplinary teams. This requires developing a shared understanding of an issue. This broad perspective combined with the right mix of expertise within Exponent’s Ecological and Environmental Practices enable Dr. Menzie to provide Exponent’s clients with the correct and appropriate level of support.
