Shoham Bhadra, Ph.D., P.E., CFEI, managing engineer at Exponent, was awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power & Energy Society (PES) award for Outstanding Standard or Guide, for his work on IEEE 1679.1: Guide for the Characterization and Evaluation of Lithium-based Batteries in Stationary Applications, alongside his colleagues of the working group. Dr. Bhadra has served on this working group since 2016 and serves on several other IEEE working groups pertaining to energy storage and batteries. His work supports his experience in battery and energy storage system evaluation and failure analysis.

IEEE 1679.1 serves to provide guidance to end-users and operators of lithium-based batteries for stationary energy storage applications by presenting a technology description, information on aging and failure modes, a discussion on safety issues, evaluation techniques, and regulatory issues for the major types of lithium-based batteries for use in stationary applications. It is part of the IEEE 1679 family of documents that address recent developments in stationary energy storage technology.

Dr. Bhadra’s expertise lies at the intersection of materials science and electrical engineering, with a focus on batteries and electronic devices. He is an expert in monitoring and failure analysis of lithium-ion, alkaline, NiCd, and NiMH batteries, and has also consulted on projects involving e-cigarettes/vapes, consumer electronics, residential and industrial fires, medical devices, software security, power generation and distribution, robotics, and solar panels. His scientific knowledge encompasses the fields of polymers and soft matter, nano-fabrication, electrochemistry, and non-destructive testing of energy storage materials. He has extensive experience in numerous characterization techniques such as X-ray CT scanning analysis, ultrasonic testing, optical and electron microscopy, and electrochemical analysis methods.
