For over 50 years, we have provided engineering, scientific, environmental and health consulting services to corporations, insurance carriers, government agencies, law firms, and individuals.
The firm has been best known for analysing accidents and failures to determine their causes, but in recent years has become more active in assisting clients with human health, environmental, engineering and regulatory issues associated with new products or processes to help prevent problems in the future. Our multidisciplinary organization of scientists, physicians, engineers, and regulatory consultants brings together more than 90 technical disciplines to address complicated issues facing industry and government today. We employ the best and the brightest from the major academic institutions around the world as well as technical specialists from a variety of industries.
Over half of our staff hold a Ph.D. or M.D. in their chosen field of study. With its roots in Silicon Valley, Exponent currently has offices located in the United States, Europe and China. In 2002, Exponent opened its first UK office in Harrogate, following the acquisition of an environmental and health regulatory consultancy. Our London presence was established in 2016, and is currently comprised of both marine engineering/naval architecture and traditional engineering service offerings, as detailed in this newsletter.
In January 2018, Exponent expanded its consulting services beyond its traditional engineering services in the UK by establishing a Marine team in London. This team has been growing strongly, and is focused on providing services for Marine Claims, Litigation and Disputes.
Our Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture expertise is utilised to offer surveys, accident and failure investigations, inspections, damage assessments/scope of repairs, expert witness and new building technical due diligence services for all vessel types. Led by this growing London-based team, we are coalescing our established multidisciplinary maritime causality efforts that will leverage our experience in conducting root cause incident investigations as well as investigating potential environmental consequences resulting from the release of chemicals and damage to marine resources.
The work of the London team is also supported by Exponent’s multidisciplinary staff of engineers and scientists located in Europe, Asia, and the United States. We provide our services to all relevant stakeholders including Legal Firms, P&I Clubs, Owners, Charterers, Insurers and Shipyards. Looking ahead, the Marine team will also include a Master Mariner which will complement the existing skill set.

In 2016, Exponent expanded its global footprint and began offering consulting services in London in both the consumer and industrial product sectors. While we have supported Exponent’s global clients with their reactive needs, we are building considerable momentum with European clients on their forward looking, proactive projects. Much of our early work can be categorized under the traditional mechanical engineering and materials & corrosion practices, as described below.
Mechanical Engineering Expertise
Since Exponent’s inception in 1967, the Mechanical Engineering practice has specialised in both analysing and preventing failures. Our consultants hold advanced degrees and professional qualifications, and use analytical tools such as stress analysis, finite element analysis (FEA), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), computer aided design (CAD), and mechanical testing to evaluate products and systems over a wide range of industries.
In recent years, our London-based engagements have expanded to include the predictive, the preventive, and the proactive. Examples of projects include:
- Design and production quality issues relating to water ingress of consumer wearable technology, whereby we developed bespoke testing methods to determine the root cause and qualify corrective measures.
- Material selection and test method development for baby products, whereby we carried out risk assessments to assist a major baby products brand to define appropriate parameters.
Risk Management & Hazard Analysis
We have also developed services in London including assessments using the EU Risk Assessment Guideline methodology and have supported global client issues. Examples of recent projects include:
- Rapid tyre deflation on a moving vehicle which enabled the client to address a specific, targeted issue rather than needing to conduct a wider recall.
- Baby product textile degradation issues.
- Market analysis of white goods in an effort to define an industry context for potential hazard and a baseline level of acceptable risk.
Battery Failure Investigation
Should a battery fail in a manner that results in electrical malfunction, thermal damage, case rupture, or combustion, a number of questions typically arise. Based on numerous lithium-ion battery failure analysis investigations, we have developed a systematic investigation approach that has proven effective in identifying particular causes of any given failure and developing recommendations for corrective action, as appropriate.
Since its inception, our London team have regularly been engaged in battery failure analysis investigations and support for clients facing these issues in Europe. We work with a network of ground transportation couriers who help retrieve units for analysis at our London office, solving the transportation challenge caused by the hazardous classification of lithium-ion batteries.

Exponent’s Materials & Corrosion Engineering staff are uniquely suited to investigate and understand materials issues in medical, electronics, transportation, infrastructure, oil and gas, power generation, marine, and other applications. Our London office capabilities comprise of a multidisciplinary approach to solving complex problems in both the proactive and reactive arenas. We hold broad expertise in experimental design, material selection, product development, multi-scale failure analysis and manufacturing processes.
Most recently, we have expanded our capabilities to include cutting edge analytical techniques in our growing portfolio. Our in-house expertise in image analysis, non-destructive testing and design has led to work with major organisations in the early research stages of product development.
Examples of projects include:
- Drop-testing for consumer electronics. We have developed workflows for high-throughput automated image analysis.
- Characterising multi-material behavior for consumer product applications. With over 15 years of Computed Tomography experience, our consultants are able to provide in-depth non-destructive analysis at the early stages of the product-cycle.
- Predictive modelling for materials selection in oil & gas applications.
- Development and reviews of experimental designs for ISO standards.
