Dr. Ajdari has extensive background in performing advanced computational modeling (and Finite Element Analysis) and experimental testing; including structural, thermal, thermo-mechanical, fatigue, crack-propagation modeling, crash and impact analysis. His expertise has been applied to develop design concepts, perform design optimization, root cause analysis, and product failure analysis in multiple industries including utility-scale energy storage, medical devices, defense, consumer products, and biotechnology. He can help clients with new product development focusing on computational analysis, prototype analysis, and customized testing.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Ajdari was a Senior R&D Engineer at DePuy Synthes Spine, a Johnson & Johnson Company, supporting new product development (NPD) and sustaining efforts. His work involved helping engineers with computational modeling and simulation on multiple spine implants and surgical devices, complex problem solving, making sound engineering recommendations for FDA specific testing, and prepare engineering documentation and reports for DHF/ regulatory submissions.

Prior to that, he was a Lead Product Development Engineer in GE Energy Storage. As a member of Mechanical Engineering Design and Product Release team, he was responsible for design and development of GE battery products (both component and system level), more specifically, the thermal management and cooling system design for Li-ion battery systems. During this period, he also worked on high temperature sodium-ion Durathon batteries with new concept development, analysis, prototype build and customized testing for verification purposes. He has conducted structural, thermo-mechanical (FEA) and CFD analysis on battery components and Energy Storage Systems (ESS). Dr. Ajdari received his Green Belt Six-Sigma certification while he was at GE, working on a project to understand and resolve cell failure due to crack formation in the glass seal area of the cells during battery operation. The project outcome was applied for the next generation crack-resistance cells. 

Dr. Ajdari earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in Dec 2011, followed by two postdoctoral fellowships at MIT (2012-2013) and Northwestern University (2012-2014) working on multi-disciplinary projects. While at Northwestern, he collaborated with group of scientists from Goodyear Tire Company and Northwestern University to design high performance nanoparticle rubber composites for tire compound. His developed 3-D image-based framework included both linear and quasi-linear viscoelastic modeling of filled rubbers using user material subroutine (UMAT). During his one-year postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, he collaborated with Dr. Pedro Reis research lab to study the mechanics and dynamics of instability and deformation localization in thin elastic shells. 

His PhD thesis at Northeastern University is about introducing a new class of hierarchical honeycomb structures with superior and tailorable mechanical properties which involved concept development, analysis, prototyping and testing. The proposed bio-inspired energy absorbent structures showed enhanced properties compared to the regular hexagonal honeycombs with same amount of mass. He also worked on a side project to understand the behavior and residual structural strength of reinforced concrete chimneys subject to an uncontrolled fire using heat transfer analysis. 

His scientific publications include 20 peer-reviewed journal publications with over 880 citations (Aug 2018), and more than 50 conference proceedings and presentations, and 4 patent disclosures.
