Dr. Alam specializes in thermal-fluid reacting systems with focus area in the field of fuel combustion, ignition phenomena, fire-suppression and flame extinction, reaction kinetics, and emission (NOx, soot) with over 8 years of relevant industry and academic experience. Within the scope of his expertise, he has conducted fundamental and applied investigations encompassing both experimental and computational endeavors. He has routinely designed and conducted wide variety of laboratory experiments involving high pressure flow reactors, flat flame burners, bomb calorimeter, full-scale engine systems equipped with advanced diagnostics involving FTIR, gas chromatography, optical spectroscopy, and high-speed infrared imaging. These studies uniquely involved wide variety of petrochemical fuels including both liquid (renewable and fossil) and gaseous phases. In addition, Dr. Alam has extensively worked with natural gas combustion in understanding the pollutant formation (NOx) for stationary gas turbine industry.

Dr. Alam also possess research background in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) involving both commercial software packages (e.g., Converge, Chemkin, Ansys) and computer codes for thermal-fluid systems. His computational research directly contributed to NASA in understanding the fire-extinguishment quality of previously untested fire-suppressant under micro-gravity condition for future space mission. Prior to joining the Exponent, Dr. Alam worked as a CFD developer at the Gamma Technologies LLC for its market-leading engine combustion/emission package GT-Power. He also instructed undergraduate level courses in the U.S. and Singapore. Dr. Alam is engaged with the combustion and engine research community and holds active membership of the Combustion Institute and Society of Automotive Engineers.
