Dr. Averett’s expertise focuses on the use of mechanical modeling tools to solve complex multiscale problems in the area of biomechanics. Dr. Averett has used his expertise to focus on biological and synthetic polymeric materials. He has both computational and experimental knowledge in modeling, simulation, and degradation analysis of the mechanical behavior of extracellular matrix materials and nanocomposite material structures at various length scales. In his work, Dr. Averett has utilized computational modeling (molecular dynamics, coarse-grain modeling, and finite element modeling), mathematical modeling, and imaging analysis for determining and analyzing extracellular matrix and nanocomposite mechanical behavior under various loading conditions. Dr. Averett also has extensive expertise in the area of fatigue loading and fracture mechanical behavior of extracellular matrix and nanocomposite structures (fibers and films).

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Averett held a faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Biological Engineering at the University of Georgia. He completed his postdoctoral training in Biomedical Engineering from the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University School of Medicine. He earned his Ph.D. in Polymer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. In his work, Dr. Averett has developed and utilized multiscale modeling techniques for examining the mechanical behavior of extracellular matrix materials, primarily blood clots. He also has experience in the analysis of nanocomposite materials under fatigue loading conditions (fibers and films) for determination of degradation and failure. Dr. Averett also has experience as a Tire Performance Engineer with Michelin Americas Research Company, where he led projects related to computational modeling, testing, and simulation of the viscoplastic mechanical behavior of tires with soft soils. He also led projects related to modeling traction and braking performance for heavy-truck, light truck, and passenger class tires. At Exponent, Dr. Averett uses his expertise in mechanics and modeling on projects related to injury biomechanics, biomedical applications, and synthetic fiber composites.
