Mr. Cunningham is an associate in the Phoenix, Arizona office. He has experience in automotive powertrain controls and calibration, specializing in automatic planetary gear transmissions, drive quality, testing and vehicle performance. Prior to joining Exponent, Mr. Cunningham supported multiple vehicle platforms into production, including full-size and mid-size trucks, and sport vehicles at General Motors. As a transmission calibration engineer, Mr. Cunningham was responsible for the design and release of electronic adapt calibrations for transmission characterization, and led development in the areas of transmission shift quality improvement, clutch control optimization, solenoid valve body controls, drive quality audits, rapid problem resolution for transmission build issues, on-time calibration release to production, test track and dynamometer testing support, future application performance requirements design and continuous improvement, and warranty claim investigations. Mr. Cunningham analyzed failure data and conducted field investigations to identify the root cause of transmission failures and brought resolution to customer product issues.
Mr. Cunningham’s testing experience complements his overall technical expertise and enhances his consulting contributions in the vehicle performance and testing areas. His duties as a transmission calibration engineer required him to perform extensive vehicle testing on test tracks at the GM Milford Proving Ground and on public roads around the U.S. for cold and hot weather, as well as altitude testing. He has demonstrated technical capabilities in computer-aided engineering and analysis of electromechanical and hydraulic control systems. He has first-hand industry experience in designing and calibrating automatic control systems using closed-loop techniques, as well as computer-based data acquisition and processing.
