Trained as a chemist, with specialization in electrochemistry and materials characterization, Dr. Donakowski has investigated materials for renewable energy applications for more than ten years. He has studied systems ranging from nanocrystals, to coin cell batteries, to large-scale power generators. He has a deep understanding of the structural and physical chemistries of metal oxides and related energy storage materials. His analytical expertise toward lithium ion batteries and capacitor-like materials not only allows him to characterize and develop such materials, but to understand how and why they fail. He has worked in academia, governmental laboratories, scientific non-profits, and startups as a scientist, nonprofit council representative, and policy advocate.

Dr. Donakowski has extensive analytical experience studying energy storage materials. He has a broad background including modelling the structure of battery materials and correlating the atomic structure of the material with the electrochemical performance of the material. His success in elucisating structure/property correlations was accomplished by combining advanced X-ray analyses (diffraction, EXAFS/XANES) and Raman and UV-Vis/NIR spectroscopies. Dr. Donakowski is also skilled in 2D NMR, TGA-MS and ICP-AES techniques, varied electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltametry, Cumulative Irreversible Capacity Loss analysis, GITT/PITT), and electron microscopy techniques (SEM/EDS, TEM). He additionally has experience in a variety of materials synthesis methods to produce crystals (including nano-scale), particles, films of metal oxides, quantum dots, aerogels, and carbonaceous materials by means of combustion, pyrolysis, hydrothermal, sol-gel, flux, ceramic, and coprecipitation syntheses.

Prior to Exponent, Dr. Donakowski developed and studied functional metal oxides for use in applications such as optics, energy storage materials, printable electronics, memory storage, piezoelectrics, and fundamental water-based oxide redox chemistry. As a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), he expanded his repertoire by using advanced X-ray techniques to study non-crystalline materials for 3D batteries and capacitor-like materials, as well as lithium ion batteries using traditional sulfur, metal oxide/sulfide, and carbon-based chemistries. After moving to SiNode Systems, Dr. Donakowski worked to develop high capacity/energy silicon anodes for use in lithium ion batteries including examining scale up of production and quality control.
